Agri-Food Immigration Pilot
The three-year agri-food pilot programme intends to satisfy Canada's ambitious export goals by addressing labour shortages in the agri-food industry, particularly in the meat processing and mushroom production industries. One in eight employment in Canada are supported by the agriculture and agri-food sector, which is a significant contributor to the country's economic growth and vitality. In 2018, agricultural exports reached a new high of $66.2 billion.
The goal is to assist the agri-food industry in bringing in the full-time, non-seasonal foreign labour force required to fill widening labour shortages. Instead of requiring workers to continuously renew their work permits, this new pilot programme gives them the chance to become permanent residents after an initial two-year stay with a temporary work permit.
In any given year, a maximum of 2,750 principle applicants, including family members, will be allowed for processing. This amounts to a potential total of 16,500 brand-new permanent residents during the course of the pilot's three-year implementation.
